Music (PreK-2nd)

music
Our goal, in our music classroom, is to encourage life-long learners and lovers of music. We want students to be well-rounded in their knowledge and skills, so that they can use what they learn in music class in any future musical setting. Students will learn music concepts through the Kodály method. Zoltán Kodály, who developed this method, studied children at play, and came up with a sequence for teaching music at developmentally appropriate levels. Students play games, sing songs, and chant rhymes, experiencing music, before learning to notate it. Kodály’s system introduces children to rhythm and pitches from the age-appropriate songs, games, and rhymes they experience in class. Once students can internalize pitches and rhythms and reproduce them with their singing voice, they are able to play or notate them more easily. In addition to the pitches and rhythms students will be able to read and notate, they will have regular singing voice and steady beat practice and be exposed to instrument families, composers and their compositions, and concert etiquette.
